AWNED VS AWNLESS WHEAT VARIETIES:

Wheat seed heads are either awned or awnless based on the variety. Awns are the hair or bristle like appendage attached to the wheat seed. The bristles make it difficult for animals and birds to eat the wheat seed.

A fact that many hunters do not know is wheat seed is readily eaten by deer, dove, turkey, and quail. Wildlife prefer awnless wheat to awned wheat. The awns can irritate the eyes, throats and nasal passages of wildlife and livestock.

Wheat seed can contain more than 12% protein. This protein is available during the summer months when antlers are growing, does are lactating, and turkey poults and quail chicks are molting and growing.

DELAYED PLANT GROWTH AND SHORTER HEIGHT:

ForageXtreme 30-06 was chosen for its shorter height and delayed plant growth in spring specifically for turkeys. Turkeys love food plots and will readily use them while the vegetation is short.

Once the vegetation in the food plot begins to get tall, turkeys will avoid food plots, especially when the vegetation is wet. Turkeys will use food plots planted in ForageXtreme 30-06 wheat longer due to its shorter height. Turkeys will eat the wheat plant, wheat seed and the insects attracted to ForageXtreme 30-06.

GRAIN PRODUCTION:

Many forage varieties have poor grain production but not ForageXtreme 30-06. It is capable of providing over 5,800 lbs. of seed per acre with over 12% protein during the summer months for wildlife when very little else is available.
